On a regular basis I scope out the retailers and see what they are selling. I always see a plethora of lost souls wandering around the Best Buy store wondering what computer to buy. Many of them have NO idea what to buy. Sometimes they strike up a converstion and I ask them what they will use the computer for and they don't even really know that. Some do know they don't want to play games so I'll steer them to a Cyrix or K6 based system. If a family has kids with it it's easy to steer them to a K6-2 system particularly if it has a 3d game running on it. I tell them to stay away from a Celeron and only buy a Pentium II if they are heavy into graphics. I also advise them to only buy about 2/3s the speed of the fastest chip which is a Pentium II-450. There is a Gateway store around the corner but most insist on buying on the spot and not ordering it. Seems to be some safety crutch for first time buyers knowing you can take it back. Most all new buyers are so unsure that they think it's neceessary to be able to upgrade. Sadly, one of the best looking boxes, the HP, has about the worst components...after that the first thing they look at is the speed of the processor....then the size of the HD. Rarely do they ever consider the low end video and sloooow HD that they are usually getting. IBM, Acer and CTX are probably three of the retail boxes you can get...most of the time you get something other than a bigfoot and a rock bottom video card. CTX is the best K6-2 box based on a nvidia riva 128 video card and 100MHz ram. Cybermax of course is a step up but that's mail order. Regards, Jim
