Re: IBM has been using techniques similar to those discussed for years and, I hope, has patented key inventions.

Typically the larger companies in an industry are all cross licensed on their patents periodically. Some money changes hands in one direction or the other during the licensing renewal, but then the other companies end up with free use of the patents from that point on.

It's extremely likely that INTC and MSFT are indeed using key IBM patents now. On the other hand, it's also likely that IBM is using theirs too.
