To all:
The ongoing political saga of recent posts has forced me to make a rare contribution. As someone who is normally a lurker, and who is long CPQ (with very poor timing I might add), the article a few posts back about CPQ Alpha vs Intel Merced caught my attention.
Without having done any research on this particular area, I am struck by one thought. Why is CPQ in the 64bit chip business? I appreciate that we inherited with the DEC takeover, but is it worth the continued commitment of resources? CPQ has enough to manage consolidating its various businesses. Why would CPQ want to try and take on Intel? Wouldn't divesting the Alpha business make sense?
Please note that I offer this idea without having investigated how much in the way of resources are tied up in this area, nor with a real appreciation of market growth. It just seems to me that at first glance, getting out of this business might make long term sense - particularly when the competition is Intel. All simply IMO. Comments welcome.
PS: the Canadian AltaVista site still shows it as a "Digital" portal. Time for CPQ to change the branding I think.
