It seems so attractive to users at school and at home. Phil, I think we are seeing the first evidence of an explosion that is about to occur. I went to the CompUSA store in Concord, CA for the first time today in my quest for my daughters best value on an iMac. In general, I was quite impressed with the layout. The ASWAS was right in the middle of the store, visible from almost any vantage point. Most of the computers were booted and working, and there was ample software. At first and although there were several people playing with the G3's, noone was there to help. Then a Epson employee, who happened to be there, starting asking the customers if he could answer their questions. This was strange, but I talked to him for a few minutes, and he was knowledgable. Later, he pointed me to one of the employees who turned out to be quite knowledgeable about the Mac platform, both strengths and weaknesses. This store employee was a Mac user, and very helpful. He was a graphic arts students, who was concerned that so many professionals were coming in to get G3's. He thinks it will lessen his opportunities for eventual employment because they will all have learned the tricks he knows using the Mac platform. The store manager is also a Mac user, I was told, and quite literate on the subject. The interesting sidenote was that this one store has reserved 200 iMacs, but has already allocated nearly all of them for preorders. The employees didn't seem too worried about not having more, but I think they are making a big mistake. The employee who told about this preorder amount said it is the largest preorder for a computer of any type he has ever seen. What concerns me is that even if Apple has a big early stock or iMacs, the desire of people to get one and not have it available could be a downer. Nevertheless, I think that the morning after the first mad dash to CompUSA's and other resellers will see the stock market sit up and take notice of Apple, regardless of what the averages do. Sam
