I don't think you have all the facts here. Check out if you will the xDSL services US West or Concentric for example are currently offering and you will see you can't get anything greater than 1Mbps (assymetrical) at "reasonable" rates of less than $200 (make sure you include ISP services). I have been using @Home for three months and get consistent symmetrical rates of up to 4Mbps ... and only pay $39.95 a month flat (this includes ISP services). The copper local loop of cable will always provide better bandwidths than what the poor twisted pairs can provide for the same amount of technical ingenuity. I am sure xDSL will be deployed and people will buy it, but there's no way you can discount the power of a model like that of @Home. Forget the idea of having anyone offer you cable TV (50+ channels) over your twisted pair, if the phone company ever offers you that it will be because they have fiber-to-the-curb and then coax or fiber also to your house, which is exactly what TCI/@Home have already done where I live.

I do hope xDSL is not dead and that they are able to provide something better than what I already have at less than $39.95 a month, but I am not holding my breath for this one. In the meantime, I'll continue to download my 25MByte files in 50 seconds (sic) !
