Re: Buying a PC via the net

Mailorder is the only way to go because of the sales tax savings. A local vendor hasn't a chance of matching a hungry mailorderer's pricing if you figure in a 6-8% sales tax burden they have to charge you. The sales tax is probably more than their margin. UPS insured shipping charges just aren't that much.

As far as buying via the net is concerned, forget it. Shop the net for configurations and such but when it comes time to plunk down your plastic, pick up the phone. Any vendor worth dealing with will "give" a bit on their quoted pricing when trying to close a sale, especially if you make it clear that you are a ready buyer. You can't haggle with a web page.

And if you really want to squeeze the last nickel out of a reputable vendor, you can usually knock a final 2% off the price by agreeing to pay by cashiers check rather than credit card. They can't make that offer, but will usually respond if you do.
