Kevin,

Double precision math is critical for high resolution graphics rendering. As a triangle moves through the processing pipeline, precision errors accumulate and cause image distortion.

Most graphics boards rely heavily on the CPU for floating point arithmetic, so there is considerable value in providing full speed double precision math.
