... a street vendor selling hot dogs.

Muffy loved hot dogs. It brought back bitter-sweet memories of those days in the orphanage. If you were lucky enough to get a warm hot dog, it was time for celebration. An occasional dollop of ketchup was, as they say in New York, "tah die fowah". Nobody dared ask what was in the relish.

She struck up a conversation with the street vendor. How fortunate for Muffy that the vendor knew all about the preparations for the ice skating rink there in Rockefeller Center. Strange, though, that his description of the various stages of ice production didn't coincide with the stage manager's version.

She blushingly asked the street vendor where the nearest "powder room" was. He pointed down into the subway stairwell. Muffy looked where he pointed, but saw nothing but stairs. Then, she figured out what he meant.

She walked down a few of the stairs so she would be out of sight of the hundreds of pedestrians in the area. She delicately lowered her britches and squatted in the corner. She felt a little foolish squatting there with her britches down around her ankles, and a hot dog in her hand.
