A technogeek note on an interesting and happy coincidence:

Excerpt from referenced article about IS-95B:

initially support data rates between 28.8 kbps and 57.6 kbps on the forward link to the mobile and 14.4 kbps from the mobile since mobile users generally receive more data than they send over the air.

And coincidentally the link from the base station to the mobile station has more capacity in CDMA than the return link. I always wondered how they were going to take advantage of the extra capacity in that link. (Add on services like paging use up some, but probably not much.)
