Thoughts on Japanese distribution...

Todd,

I don't have any hard data to back this up, but my impression has always been that very few American games have done well in Japan. That's one of the reasons why so many people are watching EA's new deal with Square so carefully (for those who aren't aware, EA will publish Square's games in the U.S., and Square will publish EA's games in Japan). Also, I haven't thought about it in much detail yet, but none of THQ's upcoming not-from-Japan games strikes me as one that would do well in Japan (I have some idea of what does well in Japan, mostly based on a magazine I subscribe to that publishes a list of the top 10 best-selling Playstation games each month).

Lastly, just as a point of reference, the head of Square-EA's U.S branch said in an interview that the primary reason it takes Square 6-9 months to port a Japanese game to the U.S. is translation issues. My guess is that it would take about that long to translate from English to Japanese, too.
