Amoco Chooses FiberChem System-wide

LAS VEGAS, N.V.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Sept. 30, 1998--FiberChem Inc. (OTCBB:FOCS), through its wholly-owned subsidiary FCI Environmental Inc. (FCI), announced that it had received its first follow-up order for system-wide purchases by Amoco Production Co. to install FCI's PetroSense(R) technology on all of its water producing platforms in replacement of its existing Freon/IR technology

Amoco has purchased limited quantities of FCI's OilSense-4000 continuous and PHA-100WL portable units and evaluated them under a wide variety of process and environmental conditions over an extended period of time. The outcome of these evaluations is that Amoco has decided to install FCI equipment on all of its water producing platforms.

According to Terry Smith, environmental foreman for Amoco's Gulf of Mexico operations, "FCI's equipment was tested in some of the worst conditions that Gulf operations could find. The products stood up to the test and FCI's people were equal to the task as well. We intend to install step-by-step one or the other of FCI's units on each of our water producing platforms. There are about 30-40 platforms affected. Based on our evaluations, FCI's PetroSense(R) technology is the best of the units we tested as replacements for the Freon based systems. Our goal is to have this process completed by the end of 1998."

Tom Collins, president of FCI said, "We went into this knowing that we had the best technology but not necessarily the ideal product for this environment. Through Amoco's involvement and cooperation we have been able to tailor our products to the specific needs of the customer. Amoco deserves a lot of credit for the way it stayed with this process, which has resulted in a better product for Amoco and indeed for the rest of the operators in the Gulf. This order represents the first step in Amoco's roll-out."

Geoff Hewitt, chief executive officer of FCI, said, "Amoco represents the second major operator in the Gulf to recently decide to convert to FCI's technology. In our opinion, the contributions of a now proven technology and concerns about the future price and availability of Freon will begin to drive this market faster. There are more than 3,000 similarly affected platforms in the Gulf of Mexico alone. Operators can choose between FCI's OilSense-4000 which sells for about $25,000 and the PHA-100WL at $6,500, depending upon, among other factors, the amount of water produced and the availability of manpower."

Production and import of Freons have been banned since 1996 due to evidence that these compounds have been eating a hole in the Earth's protective ozone layer for decades.

Hewitt commented, "This latest development with Amoco, continuing sales to Sprint Energy 76 (Unocal), the progress with the Gilbarco project, sales to the California military market and the definitive compliance date of 1999 for Florida AST market all today reinforce FCI managements' optimistic outlook for the rest of 1998, through 1999 and beyond."

This news release includes forward-looking statements that involve risks and uncertainties including the timely development and acceptance of new products, final promulgation and enforcement of regulations, the impact of competitive products and pricing, the timely funding of customer's projects, customer payments to the company and the other risks detailed from time to time in the company's SEC reports.

FiberChem Inc. develops, manufactures, markets and licenses fiber optic chemical sensors (FOCS) that produce continuous, real-time information on environmental pollutants in the air, water and soil.
