Kurlak warns again today

03-Aug-98

BEFORE THE OPEN******

Semiconductor Stocks: Thomas Kurlak of Merrill Lynch is again making
negative comments about the sector; sees no evidence that price uptick can
be sustained as excess supply of chips still very much in place; continues
to recommend that investors stay away from the usual suspects -- Intel
(INTC 84 7/16), Micron Technology (MU 33 5/16) and Advanced Micro Devices
(AMD 17 1/4); same as last week.....

Joseph - Re: "AMD - MOTOROLA alliance How do you see this impacting the semiconductor market, INTEL ?"

In the short term, it may help AMD slow down some of their development expenses. They need to conserve cash so they can effectively "put on hold" any copper development work and study Motorola's process.

When they arrive at some conclusion as to process applicability, equipment requirements, etc., they can then put in place the orders for the equipment and have them drop-shipped to Dresden - and hope that the process works.

Longer term, this will further weaken AMD's ability to maintain independent development efforts required to keep up with Intel.

A good model for this is the U.S. Welfare system. Just how has 30 years of welfare benefitted welfare recipients? They have sat idle and cashed OUR money, becoming a vegetative class of near total dependency, while the rest of us got an education, worked diligently and educated our children to do the same.

AMD may become a welfare recipient of Motorola.
