The next-generation DVD-ROM drive, announced by Toshiba just last month, is available now with iDOT.com computers, including iDOT.com's Pro Gamer system. One of the first companies to bring a DVD-ROM drive to market, Toshiba has made several innovations with the Generation III DVD-ROM drive, enabling higher-speed digital transactions and data transfer rates twice as fast as previous generation drives. Toshiba's SD-M1202 Generation III DVD-ROM drive can read virtually all CD- ROM formats, eliminating many of the compatibility problems of older generation drives. Compared to first generation devices, the new drives can read DVD-ROM discs up to 4.8 times faster and CD-ROM discs at up to 32x maximum rotational speed. Access time is also improved to an average 140ms on DVD and 90ms with CD-ROMs. Maximum storage capacities are 4.3GB for single layer/single sided-discs and 15.9GB for dual layer/double-sided discs. Bundled with all drives from iDOT.com is a PCI hardware decoder card that decompresses and plays back real time, full motion MPEG-2 video with Dolby AC- 3 audio.
