Pat,

I think you are confusing technologies. SS7 signalling is merely a legacy routing protocol for voice networks. Adding the capability to speak to legacy voice networks via SS7 is now a necessity for all ATM switch vendors and something that CSCO, LU, ASND and NT are all delivering today. The fact NN will have SS7 in the 36190 is good news to NN longs, but definately not a competitive advantage.

After being able to speak to the legacy voice network, the natural evolution is to port services to a data centric model. (Voice mail, call forwarding, etc.). That's what Stratus will allow ASND to do and that's why CSCO bought SUMA last week. LU and NT, being voice centric companies, already have service node capabilities.

I'm sure NN will respond, possibly via their Siemens alliance, maybe via an acquisition of their own.

Cheers,

Peppe
