IQ, Kurlak is again making negative comments about the sector; sees no evidence that price uptick can be sustained as excess supply of chips still very much in place; continues to recommend that investors stay away from the usual suspects -- Intel, Micron Technology and Advanced Micro Devices same as last week. Mr. Kurlak, we get your point. Given that all three of these stocks have appreciated handsomely over the past few weeks, investors are taking his comments with a grain of salt. For example, money-manager on CNBC defending Intel (one of his largest holdings) on the grounds that companies will replace computers due to "Year 2000" rather that incur cost to repair bug.

Semiconductor Stocks: --UPDATE-- DLJ believes fundamentals for sector are bottoming and that investors should use attractive valuations to build positions in quality companies; among DLJ's favorite list are Altera Corp. (ALTR 36 7/8 +13/32), Intel Corp. (INTC 83 11/16 -3/4), LSI Logic (LSI 20 3/8 -5/32), Texas Instruments (TXN 59 1/8 -1/4), VLSI Technology (VLSI 17 unch), and Xilinx (XLNX 37 1/2 unch); view differs from that issued from Merrill Lynch earlier in the morning.....

BT Alex Brown raises Ascend from "market perform" to "buy."

J.P. Morgan reiterates "buy" rating on ASND.
