08/06/98 - Ford, its Partners Name Fuel-Cell Venture 'Ecostar'

Traverse City, Michigan - A new company to develop electric drivetrains for fuel cell-powered vehicles - Ecostar
Electric Drive Systems Co. - has formally been named and launched by Ford Motor Co. and its fuel-cell partners
Daimler-Benz and Ballard Power Systems. "We're serious about putting high-volume fuel-cell production vehicles on
the road, and we wanted a name that reflects our goal," said the company's new chairman, Ross Witschonke.
Ecostar is one of two new ventures announced earlier when the three companies formed a global alliance aimed at
becoming the world's leading producer of fuel cell-powered electric drivetrains and components for automobiles,
trucks and buses (News Notes 12/15/97 & 4/7/98). Ford is the majority owner in Ecostar; Ballard and
Daimler-Benz own 21 and 17 percent, respectively. The company intends to have its fuel-cell powertrains in
commercially available vehicles by 2004.
