What a revelation! Not. This is built into the American psyche. I'm buying it now because I deserve it. To be sure, Europe has its share of the same attitude -- I deserve it (wages & vacations, safety net, etc.), but perhaps not expressed so instantaneously in consumption (U. S.). Perhaps we now get the 'best' of both worlds -- slowing demand and rising prices, stagflation. Oh, that can't happen? -- yeah, just like low unemployment and low inflation can't coexist either.
