I agree with your assessment on the patents. Since there are so many technical issues involved and these patents tend to be very specific, it is very hard to make the ruling that S3 asked for without delving into a lot more of the details. That will involve expert witnesses well versed in the technicalities of chip design. BTW, rarely do these patent infringement lawsuits end up being settled by a court - it is too costly for both parties.
