Monday, August 3, 1998; 11:03 a.m. EDT

REDMOND, Wash. (AP) -- When you hear the words Microsoft and java, don't assume the subject is computers.

Microsoft has started marketing coffee, teaming up with Borders Books Music and Cafe to sell a Windows 98 brew.

A 12-ounce package of the dark ''Windows 98 Roast'' sells for six dollars and 99 cents.

The Borders store in the Redmond, Washington, Town Center says folks from Microsoft have been in to test it for themselves.

Microsoft marketers also are venturing into the music business. They've been giving out a jazz CD along with a training book. The soothing sounds of Ray Charles, Dave Brubeck and The Modern Jazz Quartet is labeled ''Music to Install Windows 98 by.''
