the subject number is part of the main link to a thread's internet address (er..location)

I guess this is all anyone needs to know then! I withdraw any suggestions that may have misled people, since knowing this, they will have no problem finding the subject number in the URL(location).

Michelino, All,

The Opera browser does automatically show the URL. For the Lynx browser to show the URL, one must call up the "options" menu and set the "user" option to "advanced." This information re Lynx is probably unnecessary, as most of us Lynx users tend to be inveterate tweakers. I do not know about IE or AOL, but cannot imagine a browser which could not be programmed to show the URL.
