I've heard the argument that Banshee is in a totally different market than Voodoo2, but I'm not really buying that argument. First, I think there may actually be a "3dfx" market, for those gamers who absolutely want 3dfx. Then we have to look at the specs. V2 is a little better than Banshee, mainly due to the 2nd texture chip. But for many games, V2 is similar to Banshee. Given that, and the inherent cost difference, why would a first-time graphics upgrade buyer get a V2 over Banshee? Once again, I've heard what 3dfx says ... how they want the buyer to react if he already has a decent 2D card ... but I don't know.

I'm not ready to dismiss Intel and certainly the market isn't willing to dismiss them. The situation with sound chips is not the same as graphics, particularly since truly high-fidelity sound needs to be as removed from the noisy electrical PC box as much as possible. I don't recall Intel designing special polyphonic sound cores and moving them to their 440BX chipset either. That's what Intel plans to do for later low-cost supporting chipsets using their Intel740 graphics core. I agree that Intel will probably fail in this strategy (I certainly don't want a chipset like that), but perception on wall st is different.

I'm still bullish and long. Just discussing the bearish perspective.

STB's TNT Visits the Blue Tower [3:49 PM EDT]

bluesnews.com

Quake II timedemodemo1 (PII-400 64 MB RAM):

Velocity 4400
(RIVA TNT)
S3 Savage 3D
640x480
60.4
56.6
800x600
57.1
40.9
1024x768
39.3
27.0

And for fun I've been playing around on my machine with higher resolutions, and they show
off some impressive capabilities (many users get worse framerates than this at 640x480).
Quake II timedemo demo1 (PII-400 256 MB RAM):

Velocity 4400
1152x864
35.1
1280x960
21.3
1600x1200
18.0

I'm impressed as hell with this card. As a 2D/3D card that will debut between $200 and $300, with 3D performance you'll have to go Voodoo2 SLI to beat, the TNT looks like a winner.
