Loci,

Can't help with the Island stuff as I'm new at this also. However, I can offer some help with the ISP. I've tried several and, while I know it depends on the area you live, I have found the GTE ISP to be very good as far as connection reliability. I've been demotrading with only a 56K modem and have not lost a connection yet.

In fact, the whole month I've had the GTE ISP, I've only lost my connection once and I think that had to do with using PC Anywhere. So far, I'm at 56k, but am getting an ISDN line later this month (takes forever for US West to install your lines!)

Anyway, good luck! If you discover any insights into the Island trading, please let me know. I'm making little cheat cards to put next to my computer and keeping execution notes as I'm finding the ECN selection, etc., to be the most confusing aspect of daytrading.

Brent

Loci,
When using Island it is basically a giant order book which you have access to. If you put a Bid or Offer up it doesn't necessarily mean it will be hit. If it is hit there is no guarentee that if will be hit in it's entirety
Hereis a little trick that I use to use when dealing with Island. Anticipate the price that you want to get of the trade and post your bid or offer immediately Island is a first come first serve tool and the quicker you get your order in the more chance you will have getting hit. If the trade turns out to be that good of a trade cancel your order and resubmit it at a better price.
Also I don't know the commission base you are on but most broker dealers are charged per/1000s and they should pass some of the cost over to you.
eg. you buy 1000s of MSFT and get 200s @110 700s @110 1/8 100s @ 110 1/4. You should be charged nothing on partial fill or maybe the most $5 each on top of the regular commisssion. If you are being charged full commissions on 100s and 200s fills that robbery. I would inquire about there rate and see what they will do for you.
