Emile (from Bob), The only reason I even got involved with your discussion with Steve was because you were making assumptions about my evangelism of Steve that were simply untrue. Specifically saying that I was using NT in a subversive way to evangelize him - completely untrue. I stand FIRMLY on the ground that I do NOT need the NT to prove that Jesus is the Messiah. Your point is well taken that the NT is the only Holy Spirit inspired account to substantiate Jesus being the Messiah - I agree fully. There is however a but and I use my experience as an example. Everybody on the planet (Jews and Gentiles alike) know that a man named Jesus Christ came, lived and died. Most know that He claimed to be God and the Messiah and how He died. They do not need the NT to show them these things. Now, when I evangelize a Jewish person I simply illustrate the OT prophecies concerning the Messiah (ie. Lineage, why He would come, how He would live, how He would die, when He would come ... etc). In light of the OT information presented to them the simple question of 'Who could have already fulfilled all of these prophecies?' leads them to the obvious conclusion that Jesus of Nazareth did. They will not need a NT to believe it. They will do one of three things: 1. Accept it. In this case walking them through the sinners prayer seals the deal. 2. Completely reject it. 3. Ask about the NT. My point is that in trying to evangelize a Jew you cannot (in most cases) use a NT because the Jews don;t want to hear it. The attitude is prove it to me through my Scriptures (the OT) is the norm. And this attitude is correct since the OT is the foundation for the NT from a secular standpoint (I understand that the Messiah is truly the foundation of all Scripture). I DO NOT minimize the NT in any way. One of my sticking points growing up was that I needed to believe in Jesus but questioned 'what about the Jews?'. I was told to have faith in Christ without any OT groundwork to backup the fact that Jesus is the Messiah. This philosphy left the Jews and the OT out in the cold. I, at age 10, recognized that the NT cannot be used in a vacuum to prove that Jesus is the Messiah. If it is the only vehicle used to show that, then Jesus could not have been the Messiah for the Jews because of the simple fact that the OT came first. I've always had a heart for the Jews and still stand by my point that I do not need a NT to show them how to be saved. The OT Scriptures are enough to illuminate Christ my Lord. The rest, as in any evangelistic effort, is up to God to change the heart. This is response shows why I believe you are putting the house (NT) under the foundation (OT). I don;t mean that in any kind of offensive way and I hope it's not taken as such. I hope I've made my point clear. I don't want to interrupt your discussions with Steve any longer. In His love, Bob
