The U.S. experience is interesting, because in Alberta, Canada, the
major telephone company has taken a very aggressive approach to ADSL.
It's available in the two major cities, Edmonton and Calgary, at a price
of $50 Canadian which includes unlimited Internet access and download
speeds of 2.5 megabits per second. Given that this company doesn't even
have an unlimited access plan for dial-up, it's an incredible deal. This
package is offered by the telco's ISP arm. Its networking arm, which
does the T-1s and other stuff, also sells ADSL quite aggressively, and
does custom installs of ADSL in out-of-the-way regions which aren't
close to the major wire centres. I should note that I'm a consultant to
this company (in a non-ADSL part of the company), but all this
information is public. I'm not sure that people around here really
understand what a deal they're getting, but most of the people I know
who have it are very positive about it. The company has more than 1,000
customers on it right now.
