Tom,

This is partly true. My average price on the puts I sold was 1.15625. So if I have to buy the stock at 15, my "real" cost will be 13.85, which is not a bad price..

The actual problem is that I sold a lot more puts than AIM would have me buy at that price. AIM would say to buy 456 shares at that price and I sold 20 puts, so could have to buy 2,000 shares. No way do I want to put that much more money into VLSI on the long term. I don't want to keep that much free cash for it, either. These puts are Oct 15s.

What I might do is buy 15 of them back, but I'd be doing that at quite a loss if I did that right now. That's the only sure way of protecting myself against the assignment, unless it already has happened. It could even happen tonight given today's close.

I don't feel that VLSI is a bad buy at this price, actually. If I had to buy the 2000 shares tomorrow I think I will end up making money on them fairly soon.

It's my opinion that there has been panic on the rumor today and so the stock's oversold and will come back pretty soon. The news doesn't justify such a low stock price, IMO.
