Bill, floppies die, but not from earth's magnetic field.

The earth's magnetic field is not the culpret- it is inconsistencies in the manufacture of the magnetic media- some spots go bad for chemical reasons. The stray magnetic fields from monitors and motors and speakers are much bigger than Earth's magnetic field- try to get an accurate compass read near a metal desk or in your car!

But I agree absolutely- Floppies are a nightmare. You forgot to mention all the crap students load on to library and school machines using the floppy drives that cause no end of hassle.

The iMac is not the ultimate computer- but it is the easiest thing for surfing the web and sending an email, which is going to get a lot of attention from non-techs who see the need for information but do not see the need to learn how to set up a full scale PC.

Good thing is, a lot of people are still CONVINCED Apple is dead. That means the chance for more "surprises!"
