Canon breaks ground on new headquarters
SANTA CLARA, Calif.--Canon U.S.A. Inc. began construction today on a
172,000-square-foot facility that will eventually become the main base of
operations for its semiconductor equipment division.
The location will also house Canon's northern California operations,
including several other product divisions. Construction is expected to be
completed by mid-1999.
The move comes as the chip and equipment industries are beset by a
wide-ranging downturn, and indicates Canon's confidence in an eventual
uptick in the market. "Canon is going forward with a major new facility in
spite of the current slow business period for the semiconductor industry,"
said Noriharu Hirai, vice president and general manager of the division. "This
is the time to invest in support and prepare for the upturn."
The San Jose facility will include a cleanroom with photoresist track systems
and metrology tools for applications development and process evaluation.
There will also be training and demonstration rooms for high-end lithography
technologies.
"Building a major facility at the hub of Silicon Valley is a statement of
Canon's leadership in imaging technology," said Hirai.
