I'm only guessing here, short for United Systems? Weren't they a merger of two huge mainframe manufacturer Sperry-Vac or Sperry-Ran or something?

Unisys was certainly a far-sighted pick in 1991, congratulations. As I recall, though, the name change was a requirement of the merger - neither Univac nor Burroughs wanted to take the other's name, so they had to find a new one.

I think that the reason many people object to the name Inprise is that as well as being ugly, it was totally unnecessary.
