"What a cruel trick to play on those loyal AMD customers" What about my poor old Pentium Machine? Why was Intel so cruel in abandoning the Pentium at a mere 233MHz? What about us poor customers? Intel forced us to go with AMD by abadoning the socket 7 architecture.
"What are they going to do for a chipset?" The chipset for the Alpha 21164 is already here. All you need is a new BIOS.
"The Alpha implementation is way to highend to waste on a PC. " You are only saying that because you are used to low performing Intel-based PCs. By the way, the Alpha 21064PC-based low cost PCs have been available for some time already. These puppies sell for less than $2000. The K7 will replace the 21064PC.
"If they can't even keep their promise to deliver a Super7 chipset what are the chances they can deliver a desktop K7 chipset? " AMD, unlike Intel, has no wish to wipe out their suppliers and customers. They recognize that there are other companies who make a living selling motherboards and chipsets. AMD worked with VIA and ALi to produce the MVP-3 and the Alladin V super 7 chipsets. These chipsets were already available when the K6-2 came out. Was it just a coincindence?

Elmer,
RE:"If they are going to copy Intel's ideas again, they would use 1
die and differentiate at the package/slot level. That means that
Socket7 is dead. What a cruel trick to play on those loyal AMD
customers. What are they going to do for a chipset? The Alpha
implementation is way to highend to waste on a PC. If they can't
even keep their promise to deliver a Super7 chipset what are

It's as simple as manipulating the cache. Just as Intel has done with the P6-core. There may be a lot of different K7s...

In the end...all slots are dead?
