My favorite TV show was Sam and Friends. A 15 minute local Washington DC program of some guy doing silly skits with sock puppets. Black and white of course, no color TV then. The guy brought the show to my school for our spring fair one year, the magnificent Kate Waller Barrett Elementary. Very exciting, I got to see Sam and Wilkins and Wontkins in person, so to speak.

A few years ago I found an address for the puppeteer. Wrote him a fan letter, telling him how I had enjoyed "Sam and Friends". About a month later I got a reply from his secretary, along with a porcelain figurine of a sort of green frog. The secretary told me Jim Henson had really enjoyed my memories of the first muppets, and thought I might enjoy the statue of Kermit, who had evolved out of Sam.
