It's quite ironic that when Reagan was president, the Democrats were trying to kill his anti-missile defense plan which was a bargaining chip with the Soviets. But when Clinton has brought up deployment of an anti-missile defense, they are mum.

Far too little credit is given to Volcker and his recession for breaking the backs of OPEC and the Soviet states. When the prices for industrial materials crashed, the Soviet bloc could no longer earn enough hard currency.

The democrats also deserve credit for the Social Security mess. They greatly increased the payouts in the 70's, in some years as much as 20% increases in benefits, until they finally tied the increases to a faulty CPI. Later, they added additional beneficiary classes to the Social Security system without figuring how to pay for them and accounting for how much these disabilities would "increase" in one year after they were designated to benefit from SS. The large deficits began in the 70's when the Social Security surpluses were being used up...remember the 1981 attempt to "save" Social Security with still higher taxes.
