Years ago, GPS was in, then it seemed to disappear from all talk of Globalstar for a year or two. Now it seems to be back. It is such a logical and low cost added value component which would fit a large number of the assumed customers that it would be remiss not include it.

Bob, who built the Globalstar gateway at Dubbo said that it takes a few months to construct a site, so gateway deliveries late in 1998 won't be operational until well into 1999. It makes sense to me to build the gateways slowly as subscribers increase since they do cost quite a few millions to build. To take an extreme example, there is no point putting one on Easter Island with a Geostationary link until Dougjn has bought a phone for use in the Caribbean then decides to take a trip through Panama to Easter Island.

6 months is a long time in the handset business, so Qualcomm had better not make handsets based on Si chips if they can wait 4 months and put out GaAs chips, or integrated DSPs or whatever. Time is of the essence in this multibillion $$$ effort and the first satellites have been rusting long enough already.
