I'm one of those consumers being discussed. I am long on QCOM, but my mobile service is with PacBell, a GSM carrier (at the time I started my service, I didn't even know there were competing standards). My decision was based on coverage, price, services offered, etc., but not on CDMA vs GSM. To be honest, I don't know the difference. I like the idea of having a little chip in my phone that I can move to another handset if I have problems with my regular handset (I got one free with my service, and purchased one I actually like).

IMHO, the average consumer thinks that PCS is just like the phone system - standardized, with the differences between companies being in the area of service, coverage, features, price, and customer support people with good phone voices <g>. Do we actually go to the Sprint counter and try the phone, then go to the competition and compare with their phone quality? I don't think so.

If the future of the standardization debate is actually in the hands of the consumers, then the VHS/Beta comparison is very appropriate. The best technology won't necessarily win, nor will the one that's actually in our best long-term interest. The winner will be the one with the best advertising campaign.
