<<Interesting comments. I thought I might respond:

And as always Bucky, you put forward some rational valid points for discussion. You should visit the Cisco thread more often.

<<We can buy Bay routers at 1/3 the price of an equivalent Cisco router, but it would be impossible for us to integrate them into our huge Cisco-based network.

How long will carriers go on tolerating this? They normally have a policy of dual sourcing. IOS, Cisco Powered Network - Intel Inside, everyone spot the obvious similarities here? Brand marketing as a result of a Competitor have a product just as good or better than yours, potentially pissing on you bonfire. Scuse the French.

<<Also, none of the carriers are using ATM to deliver QoS, at least not yet.

They will when they need to start running voice over it, I'm not personally convinced TRUE IP on a traditional router backbone (7513, BLN etc ) will ever deliver this. May the NN products or the IGX gear but never a router.

<<I believe both VoATM and VoIP have their roles. VoATM is better for trunking, while VoIP will be used at the edges because IP is ubiquitous. This translates into carriers primarily supporting VoATM in the backbone, while enterprise customers rely on VoIP.

I agree entirely with this. Incidently as does ITU-T SG 16 hence the development of ATM cut-thru for H323 V2. If enterprise customers go on building their own private networks then they will probably buy Cisco. (IBM mentality) Carriers however have a bit more savvy and employ nerds (I use this term affectionately so no offence to carrier employees here) to research products extensively and these people that ASND LISTEN to and try not to dictate to, hence their perceived innovation.

Your comments always welcome

Bucky89,
Excellant analysis between you and Clinton. If you can, can you quantify/enumerate the ATM scalability issue? Is it management of SVCs, management of network, raw bandwidth, flow control?
I agree entirely on VoIP vs. ATM. IMO H323 over IP over ATM cells will flow alongside vanilla trunked voice ATM cells.
