[Hyperion Communications to Significantly Strengthen Its Presence in the Eastern United States]

COUDERSPORT, Pa., Aug. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Hyperion Communications (NASDAQ:HYPT) has entered into a series of agreements with Qwest Communications, Williams Communications and with several other leading fiber optic network providers that will allow Hyperion to provide state-of-the-art fiber-optic communications to most businesses in the eastern half of the United States.

Hyperion (NASDAQ:HYPT), a leading provider of competitive local, long distance, data and enhanced communications services, has entered into agreements totaling $107 million with Qwest Communications, Williams Communications and with several other leading fiber optic network providers which provide Hyperion with ownership or an indefeasible right of use (IRU) to over 8,100 route miles. This allows Hyperion to cost-effectively interconnect most of its existing 22 markets with approximately 25 new first- and second-tier markets and 25 new third-tier markets by the end of 2001.

Hyperion plans to interconnect these newly acquired markets with their existing networks in the east. Once the interconnections are complete, Hyperion will possess a fully redundant, self-healing fiber optic network extending throughout the eastern and southeastern United States allowing the company to provide local communications, long distance, ISDN, and data traffic services to most cities in the region.

"This network expansion allows Hyperion to quickly enter new markets and significantly extends our presence in the eastern United States. With the expansion, Hyperion's addressable market opportunity will increase to over $40 billion and 20 million business access lines." said Dan Milliard, President of Hyperion Communications. "It further positions Hyperion as a super regional CLEC and a major force in the communications industry."

Hyperion will offer several opportunities and benefits to the local business communities served by the regional network. First, it allows Hyperion to efficiently and cost-effectively access under-served third-tier markets and provide them with the latest in fiber optic communications. The network also provides Hyperion with the enabling architecture to extend service offerings to include data applications such as IP, ATM and Frame Relay. Additionally, it provides Hyperion with the foundation for an Internet backbone. Finally, the network allows several Hyperion markets to be served from one switching/central office location, resulting in better capital utilization in traditional circuit switch technology while providing the foundation for packet switched IP telephony network architecture in the future.

"We are excited to have the opportunity to offer the benefits of our fiber optic communications services to an expanded base of business customers," said Milliard. "Hyperion looks forward to establishing positive relationships with the business community in each of our new markets and strengthening our reputation as a reliable, high-quality, communications provider."

Hyperion Communications is a subsidiary of Adelphia Communications Corporation (NASDAQ:ADLAC). Adelphia is the nation's seventh largest cable TV company with more than 1.9 million subscribers in 13 eastern states. Hyperion currently operates 22 networks in 11 states including Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, Kentucky, Kansas, Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi. Hyperion's ventures with Qwest and Williams enables Hyperion to extend its service to Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Washington, DC, Delaware, Alabama and Texas.
