RESEARCH ALERT - Ascend <ASND.O> started as buy NEW YORK, Aug 4 (Reuters) - Volpe Brown Whelan said Tuesday it started coverage of Ascend Communications Inc with a buy rating. Said viewed weakness in shares following company's announced deal to acquire Stratus Computer Inc <SRA.N> as a buying opportunity. Price target is $64 a share.
