It is apparently Microsoft strategy to wrap the user in a warm safe environment
Try accessing your MSFT formatted drives from LINUX - no chance. Would this be an example of the UNIX crowd wrapping the user in a warm safe environment also?

There are plenty of ways to share storage across a network, even between different OS environments. It is increasingly possible to also share application environments. Getting this stuff to run in a common format on a single system is not a high priority - what's the purpose? People who have this requirement are typically running in a network environment.

MSFT has good tools for UNIX interoperability and they are getting better. They are doing a lot more in this respect than the UNIX vendors.
