TOKYO (Nikkei)--Sony Pictures Entertainment (Japan) Inc. will start in October a DVD rental service at about 100 video rental stores throughout Japan, The Nihon Keizai Shimbun Tuesday morning edition.

Such service is extremely limited at present, as studios have been reluctant to grant rental permission for DVD movies. DVD rentals are regarded as key to bolstering the popularity of the DVD format.

Sony Pictures Entertainment (Japan) currently has around 30 movie titles for sale on DVD , each priced at 4,700 yen. Rental prices for DVDs are expected to be roughly 500 yen per disc.
