Sometimes I think about how people might react if a deep insider from LU (CSCO, MSFT, ...) approached them at an event (party, conference - make your own scenario) and said, "How would you like to buy some equity, some actual ownership, in Lucent Technologies; a piece of the company?"

Most people I know would be thinking, "This is an outstanding opportunity. To actually own part of Lucent Technologies (CSCO, ...)? Wow, do you know where that company is going to be in five years, ten years, fifteen years! Actually own part of the company? You're darn right I'd love to own part of Lucent! I'll be filthy rich!"

Do you think those people would have a valuation done on their ownership on a daily, hourly, or minute-to-minute basis? I don't think so. They'd be hyper-pleased knowing that they took advantage of an opportunity to buy actual ownership in one of the greatest companies in the world; a company just emerging into its greatness with the bulk of its potential still in front of it.

Funny that owning common stocks moves away so much from the concept of owning a piece of a business and so toward shooting craps on the sidewalk.

Enough of my musings. Best to Lucent owners. ...Tim
