Wal-Mart Online To Build PCs To Order
Newsbytes - August 03, 1998: 8:42 p.m. ET

BENTONVILLE, ARKANSAS, U.S.A. (NB) --
Wal-Mart Stores Inc. [NYSE:WMT] confirmed to
Newsbytes that it will soon offer custom configured
computers through its online storefront, at
wal-mart.com The consumer discount
giant said that it will market desktop and laptop
computers manufactured by ACI Microsystems,
a subsidiary of American General Ventures Inc.,
before the end of this year.

According to Wal-Mart, the computers will be
marketed under the Avail brand name. The units
will come in desktop, tower and notebook models,
and the 266 megahertz (MHz) Intel
Celeron-powered desktop unit will have a $899
price tag. The desktop will reportedly feature a
3.2 gigabyte (GB) hard drive and 16 megabytes
(MB) of RAM, Wal-Mart said.

ACI will also serve as the technical support
and warranty services provider to potential
customers, Wal-Mart said.

The new program does not represent
Wal-Mart's first venture into consumer PC sales:
The company's stores have sold sub-$1000 units
built by AST Research Inc. since 1996. One of
the top selling points for the new line will be a
five day guaranteed delivery promise made to
buyers by Wal-Mart.

Wal-Mart Online Director Phil Martz said,
"We are always looking for ways to increase
value and convenience for our customers. Built to
order computers are another way that we can
bring that to Wal-Mart Online customers. Custom
configuration allows us to offer customers the
computer that directly meets their needs."

Market analysts are saying that Wal-Mart
could conceivably succeed in moving a high
enough volume of machines for the venture to
prove profitable, as the sub-$900 price tag will
allow families previously unable to afford a
computer to make such a purchase.
