Nutrition slaughtered because general nutrition (gnci) announced that it had to cut prices to fend off competition.... Not a good day for them to announce that.

had to cut prices on some basics --vitamins.... by 40% to compete with wal mart and discount sellers (i could use some vitamin c right since I'm sick--not market related)

so rexall and twinlab are having their margins squeezed...

just found your thread yesterday... very informative..

Jenna, I was going to as you about this. It seems that GNCI is cutting prices and starting a price war.

Jenna--WFMI reported flat gross earnings. >>Whole Foods' (WFMI) flat gross margins, which is the difference between sales and the cost of goods, concerned analysts on a conference call Tuesday afternoon. Whole Foods said the main gross margins problems came from its Amrion division and everyone's favorite reason: El Nino.

Rains from El Nino hurt crops during the year, increasing produce costs, said Chief Executive John Mackey. Produce is a large part of the company's business, he said.

"We're not able to pass all of our expenses on to our customers," Mackey said.

The company's Amrion division sells nutritional supplements and did promotional mass mailings during the quarter. Customers have yet to respond to the mailings, but the company said it sees a "very strong fourth quarter" for Amrion.

Glad I was stopped out. This is going to be a mess.

DB 14:34 DECLINERS CLOSE OVER ADVANCERS 4 TO 1 ON NASDAQ.
DB 14:34 DECLINERS CLOSE OVER ADVANCERS ON BIG BOARD 5 TO 1.

Jenna,

We know we saw it coming! I'm only getting chewed up on USWB and now AFCI....USWB did make a comeback today from low to close up 1 5/16 . AFCI got nailed at close -2 9/16. I feel comfortable enough to ride it out. Recovery will happen. ASND is still a bargain. I'm hoping we are near the end of this correction. Time to pick the hardest hit and bluest of the blue chips if you have the money let. I started buying a little bit too soon.

I believe buying on dips is now out....and selling into rallies will now be the mantra for the near term....earnings plays don't seem to be the play...however, knowing who has the best earnings performance will be key in picking bargains for the short term!

Time to be defensive,
Jeff
