eric, you are correct in stating that natural gas is odorless. Mercaptans are added to the natural gas as odorants. They don't reduce the explosion hazard by themselves, the odorant is added to provide what is often the first indication of a leak in the delivery or containment system.

I'm not sure if this is exactly what you meant.
