<<Patrick: regarding Simon's comments as to why we should not make our own cards, we disagree to a "t">>

I'd like your (and anyone elses for that matter) opinion on why that is. Especially in reference to Quantum3d being an OEM only arm. There seems to be very little downside. Both sides continue business as usual with Quantum3d doing a few more boards and 3dfx keeps all the money.

It would seem that most of the arguments against 3dfx doing a board-merger are due to revenue concerns (shelf space, marketing, etc.). My argument is that even if revenue goes to 1/4 of current levels due to poor distribution, 3dfx will still make more money than their current model. A full cost/benefit analysis should bear me out on this. (Don't make me whip out Excel and put the smack down!)

Suit: Anyone else think that the lawsuit may have something to do with PVRSG being DOA? How about the CEO's comments that advertising expenses will be offset by other factors?

Pat

More on the chipset manufacturer debate

Patrick: regarding Simon's comments as to why we should not make our own cards, we disagree to a "t". I think that all of the arguments carry water EXCEPT number 1 ("1) If one company's product is poor, another's might be better. People/reviewers will measure 3Dfx by the best of many board manufacturer's products." Lets face it, virtually everybody uses the reference design. Nobody really makes a significant
difference. So point #1 really is moot.

Yeah, I was thrown by that, too. #1 was definitely my weakest point. I had just been looking at the Wicked3D/H3D bundle and it stuck in my mind. That's where that came from.

I wasn't thinking so much about variations on the reference board. You're right they don't fiddle much (except for Quantum 3D with single board SLI) as I was variation in marketing, contacts with system OEMs and the like. This might be more important for Banshee. If Diamond goes for gamers and Creative for business users who will do better? Is it possible to go for both? I don't know, and I'll bet no one does. Having multiple manufacturers makes this easier to explore.
