Chipmakers Slide

Chipmakers such as NEC Corp. also slid as the technology- heavy Nasdaq
Composite Index fell 3.5 percent. Rivals Fujitsu Ltd. and Hitachi Ltd.
plan to mass-produce their next generation of chips outside Japan in an
effort to stay competitive in the depressed global market for memory
devices, the Nihon Keizai newspaper reported today.

NEC dropped 13 yen to 1,225. Fujitsu slid 17 yen to 1,508. Hitachi fell
7 yen to 882.

U.S. and Japanese computer-related shares often trade in tandem because
they compete in similar markets and are involved in a complex network of
supplier relationships."
