The possibility of a worldwide downturn starting with further weakness in Asia with China and Hong Kong devaluing setting off further competitive devaluations could drag us into a worldwide recession or worse. While I don't see this now this is a definite possibility in the not too distant future and you would see a nasty bear market without ever seeing a whiff of inflation. In this situation the Fed would undoubtedly be behind the curve in lowering interest rates due to their obsession with inflation and after many years of prosperity and a tremendous bull market people will be ill prepared for such an event and for you y2k buffs it would be hard for nations and corporations to devote needed resources for this under this unpleasant scenario further exacerbating problems
