Sales of Japan Windows 98 Reach 250,000 Copies in Two Days: IDC
August 5, 1998 (TOKYO) -- Microsoft Co., Ltd.'s Japanese version of the Windows 98 operating system enjoyed sales of 250,000 units on July 25 and July 26, excluding those pre-installed in personal computers, according to IDC Japan Ltd.
While the Japanese version of Windows 95, which was launched on Nov. 23, 1995, sold 200,000 copies in the initial four days, Windows 98 sales in the recent two-day period far exceeded that record. The IDC survey is based on research on users and sales channels.

Also, the company developed estimates on sales of PCs with pre-installed Windows (Windows 98/95/3.1) based upon the survey data collected by GfK Japan Ltd. GfK Japan regularly collects POS data from 3,200 stores operated nationwide by 55 major household electric appliance retailers.

While about 33,500 PCs with Windows 95 were sold in the initial week including the launch day (Nov. 20-26, 1995), about 57,000 PCs preinstalled with Windows 98 were sold in the first week including the launch day (July 20-26, 1998). This represents a 70.1 percent increase for Windows 98 as compared with Windows 95.

Based on these results, IDC concluded that the household-use PC market is beginning to show some signs of recovery. That market had been registering some year-on-year declines.
