Looks like Ericsson will install the first European W-CDMA network in Italy by year's end. Well, it would have been better if Nokia had landed this, but the main thing is that the third generation implementation is starting in Europe. Italy has been a leading European GSM country, so it's natural that they are at the forefront of developing the GSM upgrade as well.

Interesting that Dataquest is projecting only 30% increase in handset sales in 1998. This could explain the surprising weakness of Ericsson, Motorola, Philips and Alcatel sales... and it gives a whole new spin on Nokia's 50% sales increase in the second quarter.
