Senior Vice President of Global Operations; Heavy Hitter Added to Ascend's Team
of Seasoned Executives

ALAMEDA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 5, 1998--Ascend Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ:ASND), a
leader in wide area networking (WAN) solutions for providers and users of the Public Network, today
announced the appointment of Jim Hindmarch as senior vice president of Global Operations. Mr. Hindmarch is
charged with leading Ascend's worldwide manufacturing operations and expanding the company's global
presence. Ascend's current manufacturing operations, located in Alameda, Calif. and Westford, Mass., will
report to Mr. Hindmarch. Mr. Hindmarch will report directly to the company's chief executive officer, Mory
Ejabat.

at Ascend," said Mory Ejabat. "With a demonstrable track record in leading operational initiatives for companies
in the high tech sector, Jim will be instrumental in building the operational infrastructure to support Ascend's

Mr. Hindmarch comes to Ascend with more than 25 years of experience in worldwide manufacturing and
operations management. He has held senior operations and management positions at CIDCO, ROLM
Corporation and Dell Computer Corporation. Mr. Hindmarch received his BS in Industrial Management from
San Jose State University.
Tony Stagno, currently Ascend's vice president of manufacturing is retiring. For the past six and a half years
Mr. Stagno has successfully managed manufacturing operations and kept pace with Ascend's rapid growth.
Under his leadership, Ascend's manufacturing operations has broken many records, including shipping over
1,000 MAX TNT(tm)s along with more than 7,300 slot cards in June of 1998.
