Burr-Brown Introduces Industry's First Line Driver for ADSL G.Lite Systems TUCSON, Ariz.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 31, 1998--Burr-Brown Corporation (NASDAQ:BBRC - news) today announced the DRV1101, a low cost, 5 volt line driver offering outstanding performance for high speed data transfer in ADSL (Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line) G.Lite systems. ADSL technology provides bi-directional high-speed digital information transfer over standard, copper telephone lines. ADSL modems can transfer data more than 25 times faster than today's fastest analog modems (V.90, 56k). In an ADSL system, the DRV1101 is used to transmit information from the customer (upstream) to the central office--the first such single chip, 5 volt line driver for ADSL G.Lite. ADSL G.Lite is a special lower cost version of ADSL that is expected to be widely used by manufacturers of PC plug-in cards, networking products, modems, and other customer premises equipment (CPE), especially Internet access. ''By optimizing a lower cost, smaller, lower power line driver specifically for upstream ADSL applications, we are the first-to-market with this type of component driver solution,'' said CR Teeple, communications strategic marketing manager at Burr-Brown. ''Since the only comparable products on the market are higher power downstream line drivers, which cannot operate on a single 5V supply, there is no direct competition for the DRV1101.'' According to The Information Network, a Pennsylvania-based market research company, shipments of integrated circuits (ICs) for cable and ADSL modems will increase from $34.7 million in 1997 to $103.2 million in 1998. Operating on a single 5V supply, the DRV1101 can supply up to 230mA peak output current with an output voltage swing of 7Vp-p. In an ADSL system, the DRV1101 supplies 10dBm average line power with a crest factor of 5.3 for a peak line power delivered of approximately 25dBm. The DRV1101 is priced from $2.95 in 1000s and is available in an 8-lead SOIC package. Delivery is from stock.
