Glancing at an intraday chart of AND, I'd say that you fell victim to the "uptick rule". See nyse.com and search for "Short Sales" for an explanation of the NYSE's rule. (AND trades on the AMEX, but I believe the AMEX's rule is similar.)

I went on AND thru another broker, despite I use datek as well, with usually good results.

I didnt manage to sell off AND at a good limit price so I turned away then. The NYSE or AMEX tick rules are completely new for me. I do only limit trades, in general. Maybe this is an explanation why I didnt sell a piece, even when giving 1/4 on the bid.

The only case I do market trades is if I a stock keeps running and I have to sell a position into the hype. Then market orders are ok and taken at good price. Only once I bought into the NSCP hype with a market order and the haircut was 3/4 points up. I didn't bolt as it was a profit but some bucks were gone, though. If a stock runs on the NasDAQ or the quote is anything but firm at AMEX or NYSE I use limit orders and give sometimes 1/8 on the bid or the ask if I really want to trade. This 1/8 is sought even in quiet markets due to market makers moves.

About Datek: The only thing I say is that they broke two trades recently
PHYS at 24, which was cleary off market on the merger day, so I had to cover, even that was a small gain and one was NETG which I sold short at 26 and the deal was broke due to the fact that NETG was not to borrow since its ipo was out too short (< 30 days), which really sucked! In general Datek is ok even on shorts, but you have to be very hard and set your limits.
